The Bible is very clear in specifying that lying is a sin and is displeasing to God. In fact, it’s so displeasing to Him, that God made it one of the Ten Commandments.
The 9th Commandment…
The Ninth Commandment is found in Exodus 20:16: “Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
What this means is… God doesn’t want us to tell lies. NOTE: This includes ALL forms of lying.
With that being the case “Cornered in California”, if I were you, I wouldn’t take any chances of angering God by telling any lies.

Those were my thoughts when I first read your question, however, when I got to thinking about the part where you asked, “Is it ever okay for a person to tell a lie?”
Well, my devious, sinfully-natured mind started doing some “percolating” trying to come up with some kind of lie which I thought might be at least somewhat acceptable to God. And… well… here’s what crossed my mind.
1930’s – 1940’s
Nazi Germany
Try to imagine that you are living in Nazi Germany back in the 1930’s – 1940’s… and you are a proud German (a “Kraut”) however, you’re one of the “good guys.”
Then imagine that you have a Jewish friend (Abel) who you love very dearly. (Something that Nazis detest.) Anyway, one day, right outside the city of Dachau where you and your buddy Abel are hanging out, a pissed-off Nazi soldier starts lining up Jews, Italians, Romanians, Serbians, French people, Polish People, etc. and starts yelling aloud, “This man here, does anyone know if he is a Jew?”
Somebody replies, “Yes, he is Jewish.”
Without hesitation, “Sergeant Schultz” pulls out a 9MM Luger Pistol and shoots the poor, innocent Jewish man in the back of the head. The guy falls to the ground with a loud thud.
Blood Is Spurting Out
Of His Skull Like A Geyser!
Without batting an eyelash, Sgt. Schultz takes a few steps forward and points to the next person in line. He shouts, “This man here, does anyone know if he is a Jew?” Once again, somebody replies, “Yes, he is Jewish.”

Takes A Bullet To
The Back Of The Head!!!
Sgt. Schultz continues his walk down the line; suddenly he points directly at your good friend Abel, and then looks you square in the eye and asks, “This man here… is he a Jew?”
What would you say?
Would you tell the truth… sentencing your friend to death?
Or would you tell a lie?
