My Sunday school teacher insists that the love of money is the root of all evil. She even pointed it out to us in scripture. In the King James Version of the Bible…
1 Timothy 6:10 states, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Dear Wondering:
Although I tend to take everything written in the Bible literally… sometimes I do wonder. For example, years ago I was in a nightclub and some redneck fool whistled at another guy’s girlfriend as the couple walked by.
To make a long story short… the guy with the girlfriend got angry and went and hauled off on the rude guy… punching him right in the nose… leaving “the whistler” in a crumpled heap on the floor.
Was Evil Involved In
The “Puncher’s” Violent Reaction?
I believe it was.
Did his punch to the nose have anything to do with the love of money?
I don’t see any connection.
Anyway, the question remains… is the love of money the root of all evil?
Here’s the thing… to say anything different is to say that the Bible is wrong, and to say that the Bible is wrong, is to say that God is a liar or that He allowed error in His Holy Word… and… well…

Sometimes things are hard to accept in the Word, this is true, but we also have to look at what man does for the love of money.
Have you ever noticed a pattern in those who chase after a career that will bring them massive amounts of money?
Often times they will forsake their family, they will be faithless, they often are greedy, unkind to those who have less.
They let go of what is really important, and many “money-chasers” only give money to charity for the tax breaks.
If you look at every kind of evil in this world, very often you’ll find that money is the motive behind it.
Human trafficking, murder, abortion, drug smuggling, telemarketing scams, credit card fraud, check fraud, mortgage fraud, insurance fraud, tax evasion, bribery… the list goes on and on. They all have financial motives behind them.
The Things People Do
For Money Is Horrific!!!
Lusting after money will do nothing but harm a person. The goal is to have what you need to survive and not worry about having more than what is necessary.
What God gives us or leads us to do in life is infinitely more important than chasing after money… for what he provides is sufficient for us to thrive on.
When your focus is on Him, your family, creating disciples, and loving thy neighbor, you will always have more than enough of everything to keep yourself alive and well… as well as to help others in service of the Lord.
